Quantum-Resistant Tool Unveiled to Protect Vulnerable Bitcoin Funds

Researchers at Project Eleven have developed a zero-knowledge test system to recover Bitcoin funds that would be locked in the event of a quantum invasion. This system is designed to address the threat of quantum computing, which could break current cryptographic signatures.

Initially, the proposal, known as BIP-361, suggested blocking new transactions to vulnerable addresses after three years and freezing the remaining funds after five years. This would affect over a third of the Bitcoin circulation, including approximately 1.1 million BTC associated with the pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto.

While Project Eleven's researchers have created a viable prototype, further exhaustive audits and regulatory changes to the blockchain are needed before they can safeguard funds in real-world transactions. Notably, quantum computers can break elliptic curve-based cryptographic signatures but not the one-way hash functions used in modern wallet key derivation.

Only legitimate owners with seed material can prove control over their funds, while the new system can detect and prevent fraudulent attempts. It is estimated that over 34% of all Bitcoin funds are stored in addresses at risk of a quantum attack. Post-'Q-Day,' transaction signatures would be meaningless, as an attacker could easily produce a valid signature.
