Lower inflation does not mean that families can spend more: limited resources and stagnant sales of durable goods
We analyze recent trends in the durable goods sector in Argentina, where growth has slowed significantly. Although inflation has eased, it is essential to consider the broader economic context to understand the reasons behind this stagnation.
While inflation, as measured by INDEC, continues to show a downward trend—which might initially suggest a brighter outlook for consumers—other indicators reveal a different reality. More households are able to save a portion of their income, reflecting their efforts to be more cautious in the face of the volatile economic environment.
However, this defensive saving does not necessarily translate into increased spending, as families continue to be constrained by limited resources. Income and employment levels remain stable, and incomes have not regained their real value due to persistent inflation. This means that, despite saving, many people are unable to use their saved income to spend on durable goods.
In this context, the slowdown in the growth of demand for durable goods is understandable. Households, constrained by their real incomes, prefer to spend cautiously, putting off purchases of durable goods such as vehicles, home appliances, and other electronics—items that would typically have been prioritized during times of greater economic confidence.
This situation is also reflected in the latest data on the local industry. The automotive sector, for example, has seen a notable slowdown, while demand for household appliances and electronics has plummeted. This clearly shows how families are prioritizing their spending based on their available resources rather than driving growth in these sectors.
As we move forward, it will be crucial to monitor how the economic situation evolves and what changes in government policies or labor market activity might affect families’ ability to spend and, consequently, the growth in demand for durable goods.
